Note Tabs

A single note can hold up to three pages, switched by tabs along the top, so related lists live in one window instead of cluttering your desktop with three separate notes.

Adding a Page

New notes start as a single page with no tabs at all. To add a second page:

Click the Add Page button in the note's footer, or
Right-click anywhere in the note and choose Add Page

A tab strip appears just above the footer, with one tab per page. Once tabs are visible, the + at the end of the strip adds more pages.

Each note holds up to 3 pages. At the limit the + disappears and the footer button is greyed out. Hover it to see why.

Switching Between Pages

Click a tab. Each page remembers its own text, scroll position, and undo history, so switching back and forth never loses your place.

Renaming a Tab

Double-click a tab, type the new name, and press Enter. Press Escape to cancel.

By default a tab is named after the first line of its page and updates as you type. Once you rename it, the name stays put. To go back to the automatic name, clear the text and press Enter.

Reordering Tabs

Drag a tab left or right to move it.

Closing a Page

Click the ✕ on a tab to remove that page. BetterStickies asks you to confirm first, then moves the page to the trash, exactly like deleting a note.

You can get it back from Menu > View Trash. A restored page comes back as its own note (with its old colors and font), not as a tab inside the note it came from.

Pages with nothing in them close straight away, with no confirmation and no trash entry, unless you've given the tab a name. A name counts as something worth keeping even before you type anything, so a named page asks first and goes to the trash like any other.

A note always keeps at least one page, so the last remaining tab has no close button.

Deleting the Whole Note

Deleting a note (the ✕ in its header) takes every page with it, and the confirmation says how many. It looks at all of them, not just the tab you're on, so a note whose current tab is blank still asks, as long as any other page has something on it. (If you've turned the confirmation off in Menu > Settings, notes go straight to the trash as usual, a note with a reminder always asks.) Restoring it from the trash brings all the pages back together.

Next and previous wrap around, so Ctrl+PgDown on the last tab returns to the first. On a single-page note they do nothing.

Pinned and Collapsed Notes

When a note is pinned or collapsed, the tab strip is replaced by a compact page switcher in the note's header. Click it to pick a page from the list.

Pinned notes are read-only, so you can browse their pages but can't add, rename, close, or reorder them.

What's Shared Across Pages

Only the text is per-page. Everything else belongs to the note as a whole:

A reminder set on the note shows on every one of its pages, and the note's title in search comes from whichever page is currently open.

Good to Know

A note with tabs can't be shrunk quite as narrow as a plain note: the strip needs room to keep every tab reachable.
Exporting a note includes every page, each under its own heading.
Search covers every page, including ones you've never opened. A hit on a second or third page opens the note on that page with the matches highlighted.
Going back to an older version of BetterStickies is destructive to tabbed notes: older builds keep only the page that was open. Export first if you plan to downgrade.

Free Version

Every page counts as one note. With the free version's 4 notes, a note with 3 tabs plus one plain note uses your whole allowance, and so do four single-page notes. Upgrade to Premium for as many notes as you need, with tabs no longer counting toward a limit. See Free & Premium for the full picture.
